Introduction

A Pharo school, built to last.

Pharo School Assosa opened a brand-new campus and enrolled 870 new students in its first year, with 100% pass rates in Grade 8 and Grade 6. A future flagship serving KG to Grade 12.

Pharo School Assosa sits inside one national network of curriculum, assessment and teacher development, so a lesson learned in one school improves the others.

We measure ourselves on whether a child who starts here finishes here, and on what happens to them afterwards.

The problem

In Ethiopia, a place at a good school is rationed by cost.

Quality schooling is scarce and expensive where we work, and the children with the most potential are the least likely to find a classroom that can develop it.

This is not a shortage of ability. It is a shortage of access to the institutions that turn ability into qualifications and work.

What we've learnt

What we learnt

01

Continuity beats intensity.

A child who stays for years outperforms one given a single intervention. Keeping students enrolled is where the returns are.

02

Local leadership is not a compromise.

Schools led by people from the community recruit better, retain better and are trusted more.

03

The network multiplies quality.

Shared curriculum, assessment and teacher development mean each school raises the others.
